 2012 Summer Internship Program

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its 2012 Washington Summer Internship Program. Since its inception in 2007, 78 Turkish Americans have been placed in internships with prestigious Congressional offices and non-profit organizations. This program provides an opportunity for Turkish American students to live and work in Washington D.C., learn about the American political process, and explore career opportunities in the realms of policy and public affairs. Designed to enhance Turkish American participation in political life and to cultivate the future generation of Turkish American leaders, the program lasts up to 10 weeks between June-August 2012. Interns will be provided an opportunity to work in congressional offices and select Turkish American non-governmental organizations. A monthly stipend will be provided by TCA.

Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, in addition to recent graduates of Social Science-related majors are eligible to apply for this program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Visa holders are welcome to apply but can only be considered for unpaid internships with Turkish American non-profits.

Applications must be submitted no later than February 17, 2012, 5pm EST via email to Beril Unver at bunver@tc-america.org.

 Opportunity at MONDO ITALIANO

MONDO ITALIANO is currently looking for 2 Turkish/English professionals that are interesting in working part-time on a 4-5 week project. Exact length of the project might vary based on the project at hand. The nature of the job: Tele-prospecting in the hospitality industry (for a very well-known hotel chain).

Work can be done from home as you will be calling Turkey during their afternoon business hours/early morning US. This position is also open to people already located in Turkey.

The ideal candidate would be detail oriented, experienced in the selling process, is able to convey a friendly and professional demeanor on the phone, and is reliable. The following outlines the other requirements for this position.

BACKGROUND:
  • Excellent telephone skills
  • Computer literate (software and training provided)
  • Understanding of the Sales Process (we will provide training)
  • Ability to meet reasonable deadlines
  • Ability to check emails daily (Monday – Friday)
  • COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS:
    • Computer with Microsoft Word 2003 or above and
    • On-line with E-mail.
  • Have a work environment that is quiet with no background noises evident to ensure the perception of a business is maintained.

Chatham University Global Focus Program:
Turkey, Armenia and Principles
of international Dispute Resolution
On February 23, 2011, an academic panel was held in Pittsburgh by Chatham University’s Global Focus Conference, in Welker Room, James Laughlin Music Center, on the Turkish-Armenian conflict with a view towards resolving it according to principles of International dispute resolution.

There were four panelists:

  • Dr. Ercan Karakoc, Turkish historian and Chatham Fulbright Scholar in Residence
  • Ergun Kirlikovali, president-elect of the Washington DC based nonprofit umbrella organization, Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA)
  • Dr. Samuel Calian, a scholar of Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox beliefs and traditions
  • Ronald H. Linden, Professor of Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh

Pittsburg Turkish American Association (www.PTAA.org) was one of the sponsors of this academic panel and Dr. Atilla Soran, the chairman of the board of PTAA, was in attendance, along with many from the Turkish American community in greater Pittsburgh area.

Chatham University, home to almost 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students, is a private, selective, fully accredited, nonsectarian institution, consisting of three distinct Colleges: Chatham College for Women, offering baccalaureate degrees to women only; College for Graduate Studies, offering master's and doctoral degrees and teacher certification to both women and men; and College for Continuing and Professional Studies, offering undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing education online to both women and men.

On the road (and the sea) in Turkey ...
Another beautiful day in Turkey! After breakfast, we boarded our air-conditioned van for a 2-hr excursion which ended at the site of the Temple of Apollo (Artemis’ twin). What a magnificent sight! I am truly unable to describe the amazing architecture seen at this site. The intricate details in the columns of this open-air temple were exquisite. There were the remains of carvings of Artemis, Apollo, Leto (mom) and Zeus (dad). Even Medusa appeared to be having a “good-hair” day, with her snakes intact. ...
