Presentation on Cappadocia
in Robert Morris University

Submitted by Atilla Soran     Date: 22 Mar 2005

Here is a message from

Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
    Robert Morris University

Dear Friends,

I am writing to you today to invite you to a presentation on the Central Anatolian region of Cappadocia (land of the early Christian rock churches). The presentation will be made by a visitor to our campus - Murat Ertegul Gulyaz. He is an archaeologist with the Nevsehir Museum in Turkey.

Located in east-central Turkey, Cappadocia is close to Mount Erciyes (Argaeus), a former volcano. The eruptions of this volcano caused the entire area to be covered with a thick layer of lava and ash. Over time the hardened ash experienced erosion by water and wind, and resulted in an unusual landscape with chimney-like rock formations. Local people would dig into these formations and use them for shelter or as churches.

Murat Ertegul Gulyaz is a well-known archaeologist and is visiting the United States for a week at the end of March. His travels will bring him to the Pittsburgh region and we are honored to have him on our campus among other locations. He will be making a presentation on his work and will share some of the archaeological and ethnographic findings from this region.

In addition to this invitation to you , I request that you announce this event to your classes and invite your students to attend the lecture by Mr. Gulyaz.

The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday; March 30th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the International Suite of the Sewall Center. The agenda for the event is as follows:

5:30 - 6:00 p.m.: Hors d'oeuvres
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.: Introduction and lecture by Murat Ertegul Gulyaz
7:00 - 7:30 p.m.: Q & A, Discussion, and adjournment

I hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a very interesting lecture. Please RSVP to Terri Kwiatkowski at (412)262-8285 to confirm your attendance at this event.

Please feel free to contact me if I may personally be of any assistance or if you have questions about this lecture by Mr. Gulyaz. I look forward to seeing many of you at the lecture - please join me in welcoming Murat Ertegul Gulyaz with a strong showing at this event!

Thank you and I look forward to seeing many of you on March 30th!
